Manitoba joined confederation on July 15, 1870. In the language of the Cree, Manitoba means “where the spirit lives” despite inhabiting just over one million people much of the province is still mostly in the hands of nature.
Known for its great polar bear watching, Churchill is rightfully called “ he Polar Bear Capitol of the World" however Manitoba is also known as the land of a 100 000 lakes; enjoying over 2000 hours of sun a year generations of Manitobans have taken advantage of this unique combination at their weekend cottages with family and friends.

Watching the landscape change from the boreal forest into the tundra is something incredibly cool to see. The trees slowly get smaller and smaller until they disappear and the thousands of lakes take their place. This being the division line of where that happens.

In an attempt to find a good place to get an aerial perspective of the many lakes in Manitoba and Ontario, we came upon this mad made lake draining system. Very photogenic to see a lake as flat as a mirror drain so quietly into the nearby creek, the only downside being the mosquitoes.

The capitol of Manitoba and also the longitudinal center of North America Winnipeg; also known as the "Gateway to the West." Winnipeg is a railway and transportation hub with a diversified economy, culture, and attractions. One main attraction being the Assiniboine Park Zoo which holds a jaw dropping Polar Bear tunnel which conveniently looks into the seal exhibit.

Yellow, yellow everywhere; as far as the eye can see the fields are a mix of green and yellow. It really is no wonder that Manitoba's unique climate makes it one of the top world producers of canola.

Yet another beautiful sunset in the prairie, we have certain doubts about the fact if there can be an ugly sunset here. Due to the flatness of the landscape and the heat the Prairie province have some of the most active skies in all of Canada.

Following another tip by travel and parks Manitoba we ended up at Grand Beach. A 3 km long beach filled with fine, white sand and backed by sand dunes that rise up to 12 meters above the beach; it is a beautiful place to visit. Mostly undiscovered until 1917 when Canadian Northern Railway built its line, the beaches and resort featured a great vacation spot for Manitobans with daily train service to and from Winnipeg until the road was built.

Under the recommendation from Manitoba Parks, we just had to pay a visit to Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Not very well known amongst tourists the park is home to a large formation of sand dunes which after climbing up what is a mix between a latter and a staircase, you will get to enjoy.

Also known as the "Polar Bear Capitol of the World" Churchill is a very popular destination in the autumn when dozens of bears move in and wait for the sea to freeze. In the summer however there are equal amounts exploration to be done; even though it is far less busy. From visiting the local Prince of Wales Fort, the bear jail, or simply by taking a short dog ride through the boreal forest with Bluesky Expeditions; Churchill has everything.

The question of going to Churchill shouldn't be about if, but about when. No mater what time of year there is lots to see and explore and regardless of what season you pick you can be guaranteed jaw dropping experiences. With our friends at Lazy Bear Lodge we were lucky enough to capture some amazing moments both in our cameras and our brains as we watched, swam, and kayaked with hundreds of beluga whales only about 15 minutes from downtown Churchill.

It isn't uncommon to see Polar Bears and Belugas in or around Churchill at anytime of year, however as soon as you leave town everything gets wilder. Traveling on a small boat with Lazy Bear Lodge along the remote coast of Hudson Bay we were greeted by everything from thousands of Belugas to swimming and contemplative Polar Bears lounging in the sun and sometimes even both. Ending this adventure with the most beautiful beluga rainbow and sunset we have ever seen.

From Alberta to Manitoba it really is hard to miss the grain elevators. Just like Saskatchewan most cities have a grain elevator and a railway either directly in or just outside the city adding to the prairie look. Some of these have even gained fame being so picturesque against the flat landscape.

Crossing the invisible land boundary between Saskatchewan and Manitoba the land once again quickly changes. With many lakes and oil wells on the Saskatchewan side the Manitoba side is much more flat and yellow; largely due to the production of canola, Manitoba is one of the leading production hubs for canola in the world.
