On June 13, 1898 Yukon separated from the Northwest Territories becoming Canada's second territory. Yukon is most known for the Klondike Gold Rush  in the late nineteenth century which brought thousands of new settlers to the city of Dawson and the harsh environment of Canada's North. Yukon also has Canada's highest mountain Mt Logan, the only highway in the world to cross the Arctic Circle and what is considered the toughest dogsled race in the world, the "Yukon Quest."
